Celle-ci se moque de lui... et, lui offrant un mouchoir pour qu'il sèche ses larmes, elle lui donne en même temps, malencontreusement, le message qui s'y cachait. Le prince découvre le mot... adressé à un autre un rendez-vous amoureux dans une chambre du palais.

What a fun read this was. The action starts on a big fair day in Paris, during a rainstorm, at an inn at St. Denis. EIght people are gathered together, four of whom know each others, but the rest are strangers. An elderly fortune teller begs to be allowed in from the rain, and the gentle Prince de Conde instructs the innkeeper to let her in. She reads the fortunes of six of the men present: three will be assassinated, and three will be assassins!The plot roles out before the background of the French wars of religion, during the reign of Francois II. A fascinating prelude to Dumas's Queen Margot.
It has an abrupt ending, but I enjoyed it a great deal.
